Stress Awareness Month

April 2026: Stress Awareness Month

Why recognising stress early matters more than ever

April marks Stress Awareness Month, an annual campaign dedicated to raising awareness of the impact stress can have on our mental and physical wellbeing. First established in 1992, it encourages open conversations, reduces stigma, and promotes practical ways to manage stress in everyday life.

In today’s fast-paced world, stress has become something many people simply “live with” – but it shouldn’t be ignored.

What is stress?

Stress is the body’s natural response to pressure or perceived threat. In small doses, it can be helpful – motivating us to meet deadlines or respond quickly to challenges. However, when stress becomes prolonged or overwhelming, it can begin to affect both our mental and physical health.

Left unmanaged, ongoing stress can lead to burnout, anxiety, sleep problems, and even physical symptoms such as headaches, muscle tension, and digestive issues.

Signs you might be experiencing stress

Stress can show up in different ways, and it’s not always obvious at first. Common signs include:

  • Feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or irritable
  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Headaches or muscle tension
  • Changes in appetite or energy levels

Everyone experiences stress differently, which is why recognising your own early warning signs is so important.

Why Stress Awareness Month matters

Stress Awareness Month is a reminder to pause and check in – not just with ourselves, but with those around us.

It encourages us to:

  • Start conversations about stress
  • Recognise the signs earlier
  • Take small, proactive steps to manage it
  • Seek support when needed

Even small daily changes – like taking regular breaks, setting boundaries, or simply talking to someone – can make a meaningful difference over time.

Practical ways to manage stress

There’s no one-size-fits-all solution, but simple, consistent habits can help reduce the impact of stress:

1. Take regular breaks
Short pauses throughout the day can help reset your focus and reduce overwhelm.

2. Move your body
Exercise – even a short walk – can improve mood and lower stress levels.

3. Prioritise sleep
Sleep is essential for both physical and mental recovery.

4. Set boundaries
Learning to say no and protecting your time is key to preventing burnout.

5. Talk about it
Sharing how you feel with someone you trust – or a healthcare professional – can be incredibly powerful.

When to seek support

If stress is starting to feel constant, overwhelming, or is affecting your daily life, it’s important to seek professional support.

At See Me GP, we understand that stress often sits alongside busy lives, demanding careers, and family responsibilities. That’s why we offer:

  • Flexible appointments that work around your schedule
  • Continuity of care, so you can speak to a GP who understands you
  • A calm, discreet environment to talk openly about your health

You don’t have to wait until things feel unmanageable – early support can make a significant difference.

A final thought

Stress may be a part of modern life, but living in a constant state of overwhelm doesn’t have to be.

This Stress Awareness Month, take a moment to check in with yourself. Small steps, taken consistently, can lead to meaningful change – and better long-term health.
