Dementia Action Week

Dementia Action Week: 18th – 24th May

Dementia affects millions of people across the UK, yet many individuals and families still feel unsure about recognising the early signs or knowing when to seek help. During Dementia Action Week, we want to help raise awareness, encourage open conversations, and remind people that support is available.

While occasional forgetfulness can be a normal part of ageing, persistent changes in memory, behaviour, communication or daily functioning should never be ignored. Seeking advice early can make a significant difference for both the individual experiencing symptoms and the people around them.

What is dementia?

Dementia is not a single disease, but a term used to describe a group of symptoms caused by different conditions affecting the brain. The most common type is Alzheimer’s disease, but there are several other forms of dementia, including vascular dementia and Lewy body dementia.

Symptoms can vary from person to person, but dementia may affect:

  • Memory
  • Concentration
  • Language and communication
  • Mood and behaviour
  • Decision making
  • Ability to carry out everyday tasks

For many families, the changes can happen gradually, making them difficult to spot at first.

Early signs to look out for

Some early signs of dementia may include:

  • Increasing memory loss that affects daily life
  • Repeating questions or conversations
  • Difficulty finding the right words
  • Confusion with time or familiar places
  • Changes in mood or personality
  • Difficulty managing finances or familiar tasks
  • Withdrawal from social situations

It’s important to remember that these symptoms do not automatically mean someone has dementia, but they are worth discussing with a healthcare professional.

Why early diagnosis matters

Many people delay seeking help because they are worried about what a diagnosis might mean. However, an early assessment can provide reassurance, clarity and access to support sooner.

Early diagnosis may help individuals and families:

  • Understand the cause of symptoms
  • Access treatment and support services earlier
  • Plan for the future with greater confidence
  • Improve quality of life and daily management
  • Reduce anxiety around uncertainty

In some cases, memory symptoms may also be linked to other treatable causes such as stress, vitamin deficiencies, poor sleep, thyroid problems, anxiety or depression.

Supporting someone with dementia

If you are concerned about a loved one, approaching the conversation gently and supportively is important. Many people living with memory difficulties may feel frightened, embarrassed or frustrated by the changes they are experiencing.

Simple ways to support someone include:

  • Listening patiently
  • Offering reassurance rather than correction
  • Encouraging routines
  • Helping with appointments or organisation
  • Seeking professional advice together

Caring for someone with dementia can also place emotional strain on family members and carers, so it’s equally important that carers receive support too.

How we can help

At See Me GP, we understand that concerns about memory or cognitive changes can feel overwhelming. Our GP appointments provide time to talk through symptoms properly, discuss concerns in a calm and confidential setting, and explore whether further assessment may be appropriate.

We believe continuity of care and having the time to listen are especially important when supporting patients and families navigating uncertainty around memory health.

If you are worried about yourself or someone close to you, please remember that you do not have to face these concerns alone.
