Flu season

Why you should get the Flu Vaccine this season

As the weather cools down and Autumn settles in, it’s a sure sign that flu season is upon us. With all the talk about COVID-19 vaccinations in recent years, it’s easy to forget that the flu vaccine remains an essential part of protecting our health every year. So, why should you prioritise getting your flu vaccine this season?

Here are some of the key reasons:

1. Protect Yourself from Serious Illness

One of the most obvious reasons to get a flu vaccine is to protect yourself. The flu is not just a bad cold. It can cause high fevers, muscle aches, fatigue, and respiratory symptoms that can knock you off your feet for weeks. For some people, the flu can lead to serious complications like pneumonia, leading to hospitalisation.

The flu virus evolves every year, meaning that a new strain is circulating each season. This is why the vaccine is updated annually to match the most common flu strains, giving you the best defence against becoming unwell. Even if you’re healthy and in the prime of your life, the flu can take it’s toll, and vaccination is your best line of defence.

2. Help Protect Vulnerable People

Not everyone can get a flu vaccine, and not everyone responds as effectively. This includes young children, the elderly, pregnant women, and people with certain chronic health conditions like asthma, diabetes, or heart disease. For these groups, getting the flu can be far more dangerous, often leading to severe complications that could require hospitalisation.

When you get vaccinated, you’re helping to build what is known as “herd immunity.” Herd immunity occurs when enough people are immune to a disease (either through vaccination or previous illness), making it harder for the virus to spread. Even if you’re unlikely to get seriously ill, you could still catch the flu and pass it to someone who is more vulnerable.

3. Prevent the Spread of the Flu Virus in Your Workplace and School

If you’ve ever had to miss work or school because of the flu, you know how disruptive it can be. Not only are you stuck at home feeling miserable, but your absence may also impact the productivity of your team or classmates. The flu spreads easily in communal settings like offices, classrooms, and public transportation, making it vital to reduce transmission wherever possible.

A vaccinated workforce means fewer sick days, less disruption to projects, and fewer people having to take time off to recover. This can benefit businesses by reducing absenteeism and keeping operations running smoothly during flu season.

In schools, flu outbreaks can spread quickly among students, leading to high rates of absenteeism, which can impact academic progress and force schools to take additional measures to control the spread. Vaccinating yourself and your children helps protect educational environments and keeps everyone on track.

4. Flu Vaccination Is Safe

Some people worry about the safety of the flu vaccine, but it has a long-established safety record. Flu vaccines are rigorously tested and monitored by health authorities. The vaccine is made from either inactivated (killed) virus or a single protein from the virus, which means you can’t get the flu from the vaccine. Any side effects are typically mild, such as soreness at the injection site or a low-grade fever, and these go away within a day or two.

5. Stay Ahead of a Potentially Difficult Flu Season

Flu seasons are unpredictable. Some years, the flu is mild, while other years, it can be severe. Factors like the flu strain circulating and the number of people vaccinated each season contribute to the overall impact of flu season. Getting vaccinated early, before flu season peaks, gives your body time to build immunity and reduces your risk of infection when the virus is most widespread.

In seasons where the flu is particularly virulent, a flu vaccine can be the difference between a mild illness and a trip to the hospital. Staying proactive by getting vaccinated gives you the best chance to stay healthy.
